Full-time Position Location: Sioux Lookout or Thunder Bay, Ontario

Salary range starting from $57,869 to a maximum of $70,454/yearly



The Approaches to Community Wellbeing is a regional resource to 31 First Nations Communities. The Approaches to Community Wellbeing provides expertise, support, services, and programming in public health to the region. The Safe Communities section of the model includes Environmental Concerns, Preventing Injuries, and Emergency Preparedness.

The Environmental Health Assistant is responsible for building, maintaining, and expanding relationships with key partners through engagement with communities around Safe Communities processes and priorities. The individual will support communities in capacity building around Safe Communities and assist Environmental Public Health Officers (EPHOs) in the delivery of environmental health programming and training.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Diploma in a health-related field or equivalent
  • Two years experience in a similar role in a First Nations health setting
  • Knowledge of the people, culture, language of the First Nations communities in the Sioux Lookout area
  • Basic understanding of environmental health principles and concepts and awareness of the environmental health priorities of the First Nations communities in the Sioux Lookout area
  • A strong set of interpersonal skills to establish and maintain rapport effectively with clients and partners
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team and foster relationships with stakeholders within SLFNHA and communities
  • Must be able to communicate in one or more of the First Nations dialects of the Sioux Lookout area
  • The ability to write in syllabics is an asset
  • Must be willing to travel to remote northern communities

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Work collaboratively with community partners including, tribal/band councils, pandemic teams and technical services staff to ensure timely responses to issues relevant to Safe Communities program areas
2. Establish and maintain close working relationships with each First Nation community's leadership, health staff and other partners to build capacity and promote awareness of Safe Communities programming and services
3. Help to coordinate training opportunities and provide education for community members in safe food handling, solid waste management, injury prevention, climate change, sewage disposal, and other key environmental health issues
4. Conduct health promotion activities for community members to raise awareness and increase understanding of environmental health issues through various mediums such as radio, television, social media and public forums
5. Assist Environmental Public Health Officers (EPHOs) in conducting inspections of food establishments, schools, and other public facilities or institutions
6. Work with community-based staff and EPHOs to support water testing and monitoring
7. Work collaboratively with community partners to provide education and develop plans to prevent, mitigate, and respond to climate change and its environmental impacts on communities
8. Develop and maintain community complaints/queries log and develop systems to monitor and gauge complaints/queries and their resolutions
9. Demonstrate professionalism and accountability by maintaining client and community confidentiality and completing the required documentation
10. Conduct community engagement visits to discuss the needs and desired future state for environmental health
11. Attend meetings, training, workshops and team-building exercises to increase personal knowledge and competence in environmental health
12. Other related duties as directed by the Safe Communities Manager
13. Provide assistance when required and any other duties assigned
